There are many types of electrical outlets in the United States, including:

  • Standard 2-prong outlets

  • GFCI outlets

At Hoffman Electrical & A/C, we will install an outlet that works best for your home or office. When installing a new outlet, we’ll send one of our licensed technicians to your property in order to
determine what types of outlets your electrical system is currently using, and which is best to install. Our electricians will then install your new outlet(s) and make sure the outlet is properly wired into your existing electrical circuit in order to work correctly.

When Do I Need New Outlets in Tampa?

Though homeowners utilize electricity on a very routine basis, we know it can be somewhat difficult to tell when you need new outlet installation or need to replace your outlets. And honestly there’s no real “exact” specification for replacing, either. Luckily, there are actually some very clear signs! We’d recommend seeking outlet installation services in Florida when:

  • You need more electrical access. While you can make some use of power strips or surge protectors, these were designed to be a temporary solution. If you find yourself needing a place to plug in that kitchen accessory or computer, simply call on our experts to install a new dedicated circuit and outlet!
  • Your outlets show clear signs of damage. Wear, discoloration, and cracking are all obvious signs that you need new outlet installation. But you should also keep an eye out for outlets that begin to lose their “grip,” as well. These present a very serious danger of electrical fire and need to be replaced right away.
  • Your outlets are ungrounded. Ungrounded outlets are the ones with the standard two plug slots, but lack the “ground” wire hole. These are no longer in code, and are an unnecessary danger to your home, so be sure to get new outlets installed if yours are ungrounded!

The Benefits of Updating Outlets

There’s no hard and fast rule on when outlets need to be replaced and upgraded, but ensuring you get the service at the right time can provide you with a lot of benefits, primarily in safety. Grounded outlets for your entire home, and GFCIs in areas where moisture may be present will save you a lot of risk and potential loss.

Additionally, newer outlets (namely those installed in the past 15 or so years) simply accommodate our needs better, and more safely. By eliminating backfeed and common causes for electrical surges, you get a safer, more modern-friendly home!

Outlet FAQs

What is a GFI?

Technically speaking, GFI stands for Ground Fault Interrupter and is used to measure the resistance on the positive and negative electrical loads connected to it. Often found in or near wet areas of the home – bathrooms, kitchens, garages, all outdoor receptacles, etc. – or locations where electrical shock is most likely to occur. When it detects an unsafe level of electrical current, it will trip to prevent you from shock. A built in circuit breaker will then reset once the problem is resolved.
