What Is a Breaker Panel?

Hoffman Electrical & A/C Breaker PanelA breaker panel—sometimes referred to as a “circuit breaker” or “circuit breaker panel”—is the main distribution point of electricity to your home. It is made up of many circuit breakers in control of different sections—or circuits—of your Tampa home. You may not even know where your breaker panel is located, since it is often placed in a closet or basement.

Functions of a Breaker Panel

The main function of a breaker panel is to prevent electrical fires in your home. Electricity flows from an outside source (power sent from your utility company) through a service entrance and passes through various phases before passing through an individual circuit breaker in your panel.

If the amount of electricity flowing through the circuit breaker exceeds a preset amount (often between 100 – 200 amps), the circuit breaker will automatically trip—or cut power to a portion of your house—and you’ve blown a circuit! Each breaker monitors an individual circuit, and multiple outlets may be associated with each circuit and breaker.

What Causes a Breaker to Trip?

A breaker trips when too much power is flowing through it. Often times this means too many appliances are plugged into the same circuit. Common causes of a blown circuit are:

  • Window-mounted air conditioners
  • Hair dryers
  • Microwaves/microwave ovens
  • Toasters
  • Coffee makers

Avoid tripping a breaker by turning off and unplugging appliances or other electrical devices when they are not in use.

Breaker Panel FAQs

How do I reset a tripped circuit?

If you tripped a circuit, first locate your breaker panel (usually found in a garage, basement, closet, or hallway). Find the panel, open it, and identify the tripped breaker by looking for the breaker that is neither in the “on” or “off” position. It may be orange or red in color to quickly find it. Once the tripped breaker is located, push the switch to the “off” position and then back to the “on” position. Your breaker should now be aligned with the rest of the breakers on your circuit panel and should be working.

Why does my circuit always trip?

If you find a specific circuit continues to trip over and over, you may have too many electrical items or devices running on the same circuit, or a faulty short. If your circuit breaker does not reset, give us a call to prevent further damage!
