Signs Your Breaker Panel May Need Professional Attention
The following signs may indicate that your panel needs attention from a licensed electrician:
- Frequent circuit trips: This generally happens when you overload a circuit with too many high-power devices, but it could also be from a short circuit in the system or a worn-out breaker.
- A burning smell or scorch marks: These can indicate excessive heat from a poor electrical connection and should be promptly inspected by a professional.
- A fuse box: This technology is obsolete, designed for the electrical needs of the 1950s and 1960s, not for homes with HVAC systems and other high-powered electronics. If you have a fuse box, we'll replace it with a modern electrical panel.
- A home older than 20 years: These homes may not have the capacity to handle modern electronics. We can inspect your old panel, do a load calculation to determine how much power your home needs today and replace it with an appropriately sized modern panel.
- Flickering or dim lights: This is typically caused by a sudden voltage drop when a large appliance kicks in or by a loose neutral wire, which can create a safety concern. Diagnosing and fixing the source requires a professional to check out your breaker panel.

Breaker Panel FAQs
How do I reset a tripped circuit?+
If you tripped a circuit, first locate your breaker panel (usually found in a garage, basement, closet, or hallway). Find the panel, open it, and identify the tripped breaker by looking for the breaker that is neither in the “on” or “off” position. It may be orange or red in color to quickly find it. Once the tripped breaker is located, push the switch to the “off” position and then back to the “on” position. Your breaker should now be aligned with the rest of the breakers on your circuit panel and should be working.
Why does my circuit always trip?+
If you find a specific circuit continues to trip over and over, you may have too many electrical items or devices running on the same circuit, or a faulty short. If your circuit breaker does not reset, give us a call to prevent further damage!
