If you own or manage a business, you know how important proper lighting is to your company’s day-to-day operation. A popular lighting choice found in Tampa and St. Petersburg commercial properties is fluorescent lighting, which requires the proper installation of a ballast to work correctly and provide efficient lighting.
If you find your fluorescent lights flickering intermittently, call Hoffman Electrical & A/C at 866-238-3243 today! Our licensed electricians have the skills and training to properly remove and replace the ballast in your fluorescent lights.
Since fluorescent lights don’t “burn,” a malfunctioning ballast is often mistaken for a burned out bulb. If you notice any of the following signs, it may be time to call Hoffman Electrical & A/C for ballast replacement:
Fluorescent light bulbs don’t burn like a traditional incandescent light bulb. Instead, fluorescent bulbs are tube-shaped and have a low pressure mercury vapor gas discharge—meaning it is filled with light-emitting gases. When an electrical current passes through the tubing, it excites the mercury, which then emits ultraviolet light. This causes a phosphor coating to stick to the inside of the tube, which glows and is the light you see. When turning on a fluorescent light, a ballast is used to regulate the amount of electrical current flowing through the tube, just like a resistor.
A ballast will allow the proper amount of electricity to flow through the tube when first turning on your fluorescent lights, then quickly reduce the electrical current to provide a steady source of light and prevent damage to your bulbs. Simply put, a ballast controls the electricity to properly illuminate fluorescent lights. On average, you can expect your ballast to last anywhere between 40,000 – 100,000 hours.
Hoffman Electrical & A/C is a family owned and operated business serving the Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL areas since 1989. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff of electricians can replace the ballast in your fluorescent lighting without distracting the employees in your company.
